Storied One
Storied ones are the characters of great stories that have transcended fiction and have been turned into story realms. As long as storied ones remain in their own story realms, they do not age, and they are free to live full lives, well beyond the stories that were originally written for them. Sometimes, when the story realms are built, the story does not play out exactly as the author planned, so storied ones may differ from their reputations.
Librarian
The first twelve librarians were instated long ago. They tend to the Library. This means keeping the place in order, ushering newly born storied ones into the right dimension when sequels are made, and other basic tasks. In addition to these basic responsibilities, Librarians are also bound to two very important, solemn duties. The first is ensuring that Inkwell City is never found by the wrong storied ones by constantly moving the portals that lead to Inkwell City. The second is protecting the keys to the Inkwell. Every librarian holds a key.
Any librarian can instate a new librarian by "breaking" his or her key, which will turn the one key into two, and giving the second to the new librarian. Most librarians are former storied ones. When a storied one accepts the job of librarian, he or she forfeits his/her eternal lifetime. With the exception of elder librarians, librarians have mortal lifetimes, as it is too much power and responsibility to hold onto forever.
It is up to the librarians to decide when the story realms are ready to have the Inkwell unsealed, allowing free travel between realms like long ago.
In addition to any special abilities they may have had as storied ones, all librarians have the ability to activate and travel through portals between realms as well as memory manipulation. They are able to usher storied ones through portals but are sworn to do so only under the most dire circumstances.
At any given time, there are twelve or fewer elder librarians. The elder librarians are allowed to maintain their immortal lifespans so that they may teach and guide younger librarians with their lifetimes of wisdom and knowledge. Only elder librarians can initiate existing librarians into the circle of elders, and they may only do so by forfeiting their own key and giving up their position when they are ready to retire.
Villains
All that is currently known about the villains is that they want to open the Inkwell, and to do so, they have recently ransacked the library and massacred all but a handful of librarians. Who they are, where they came from, the details of their motives? As Natasha Bedingfield would say, "The rest is still unwritten..."
Mortal
Mortals do not have special abilities or an immortal lifespan unless these have been granted by a magical being. Many live in the Unenchanted Realm, but others are the ordinary people who exist in the lives of Storied Ones but didn't quite make it into the story. Like Mr. Darcy's second cousin, twice removed. Or the coffee guy down the street from Belle's house.
Clone
Clones of storied ones are born to manage the downtown shops of Inkwell City to make the realm feel more real and lively for the librarians, who sacrifice being in their home realms with their loved ones to protect the universe. Clones appear instantly, knowing who they are, where they are, and their purpose, whenever a new part of the magically-expanding downtown appears. Many clones cheerfully perform their duties and are friends of the librarians, proud to serve the protectors of the universe. Others deeply resent being born for the sole purpose of service.
