When a story is told, shared, and shared again, touching many, transcending its author and even its time, the people and places of the story are imparted with life and transported to a dimension of their own: a "story realm." Long ago, portals between story realms were many, and “storied ones” were free to travel from realm to realm, making friends in every dimension.
That was until Zeus realized that not all story realms were created equal. Some realms were full of magic, with powerful creatures abound, while others had no magic at all. In these other realms, Zeus realized, he could be more than just a god. He could be God. He rounded up a small group of powerful storied ones, and together, they began conquering the story realms, one by one. Other powerful storied ones caught onto Zeus’s plan and began building armies and story realm empires of their own. It was not long before the realms were in an all-out war.
Entire realms were destroyed in the war. The destruction did not stop until a large alliance of witches was able to cast a spell powerful enough to subdue Zeus and the other conquerors.
To prevent such warring and destruction from ever happening again, the witches sealed off the numerous portals and created just one portal in every realm, leading to a single new realm: Inkwell City.
The witches also created the first twelve Librarians, imbued with, among other abilities, the power to travel to other realms from the Library of Inkwell City. Among other responsibilities, the Librarians had two very important jobs. Firstly, they were in charge of constantly moving the portals in each realm to keep them from being found by the wrong storied ones. Secondly, every librarian kept a key to the Inkwell.
The Inkwell is the magical object to which the witches' spell that created Inkwell City is bound. It is locked in a building, which is sealed with a protection spell that can only be broken if all Librarians use their keys at once. If the Librarians choose to unseal the Inkwell, all of the witches’ actions will be undone, and the story realms will be returned to how they once were, open to free and easy travel between realms. Unsealing the Inkwell will also free Zeus and the other conquerors, who are locked away with the Inkwell by the same protection spell.
Despite the great responsibilities, the Librarians were able to successfully do their jobs for thousands of years, keeping the realms safe… until now.
Some villains have found a portal to Inkwell City and have ransacked the Library, where the portals to each realm are kept, and they have massacred all but a handful of the Librarians. As a consequence of the Library’s destruction, storied ones from many realms are being involuntarily pulled to Inkwell City, where they are now stuck.
The storied ones will have to work together with the Librarians if they ever want to see their homes again… before the villains manage to unseal the Inkwell, opening the realms and freeing the conquerors before the world is ready and dooming the realms to another war.
