Welcome to The Inkwell, an original cross-over fiction universe. Storied ones from every dimension are stuck in Inkwell City due to the destruction of the Library. Many paths will unexpectedly cross as the storied ones fight to rebuild the portals, find their way home, and stop the villains from unsealing the Inkwell and restarting an ancient war.

Canon characters, also known in our universe as storied ones, are characters that come from other media, such as novels, comic books, and movies.
1.1.1 How much can/should I change the character?
From a little bit to as much as you want. It is said that once a story realm is built, the story does not always go completely as the author planned, so feel free to change what happens in the story. Alternatively, you can keep the story as it is written and add to it by deciding what happened to the character after his/her original story ended. We only ask that you do not play a carbon copy of the original character.
1.1.2 What kind of canons are allowed? Are there any banned canons?
Canon characters must originate from public domain (i.e. not protected by any copyright). This is intended both to respect copyright holders and to encourage creativity. (When a character is still widely known and appreciated, there is no need to put your own spin on the character to create interest, and where's the fun in that? )
There are many resources online to help you find characters that are under public domain. Here are some links to help you get started.
Copyright Term Guide (Cornell) You can look up the year when the original work containing your canon character was published to find out whether or not the character is likely in public domain here.
Keep in mind that these lists and directories are often very incomplete. The best way to find out if your character falls under public domain is to look up when the character's original work was published and find out the copyright law governing works published in that year. If you need help, you can always ask the admins.
Some canons are banned or restricted. You can find a list here.
We allow OCs, also called mortals in our universe.
These characters do not appear in any other stories.
They may be written as characters that exist in the universes of canon characters but simply didn't make it into those stories, like unimportant neighbors.
100% original characters, or characters that are not associated with any other universe at all, are only allowed if the character is from the Unenchanted Realm, i.e. the real world.
2. What kind of species & special abilities are allowed?
In short, anything goes... within reason.
Any species is fine, since characters will be coming from all kinds of universes. Some examples: human, gifted human, witch, vampire, werewolf, android, clone, god.
The special abilities given to the character should make sense (the character already has the abilities in the original stories, or it would make sense for the character to acquire the abilities at some point).
Also, the character should not be ridiculously overpowered. The universe has a built-in rule to help you meet this qualification: to protect the Librarians, Inkwell City is enchanted so that very powerful storied ones (e.g. witches, gods, vampires from some universes) will be weakened upon arrival until they return to their home realms. It is up to you to write how this affects your character.
4. I'm not sure what group my character falls under?
Technically, all characters fall under Storied Ones, Mortals, or Clones. These groups specify where your character comes from and covers all possibilities.
Storied ones are from story realms, created by an author writing a great story. As the legendary figures of these great stories, they never age.
Mortals are usually from the Unenchanted Realm (the real world). They may also be from story realms, but they were not part of the actual story; they basically only exist to populate the realm. Unlike storied ones, they do not have immortal life spans.
Clones are born in Inkwell City to populate the realm, serve the librarians, and keep them company.
However, you may notice two more groups: Librarians and Villains. What are these?
Any character can become a librarian if initiated by an existing librarian. When he/she accepts the job, he/she gains the special abilities of a librarian but loses his/her immortal lifespan if he/she was a storied one.
Any character can be a villain as well. These are just the characters that are trying to defeat the librarians and unseal the Inkwell.
If your character is a librarian or a villain, then that's the group you should put on your application, since these groupings are more specific than storied one, mortal, or clone.
